LGL-HDA: Feasibility Assessment for Closed OpenVZ-to-PVE Migration

Updated: 04/06/2026
In a closed virtualization environment with no direct export path, WalksCloud validated a staged backup-to-ESXi-to-PVE migration approach and documented its constraints for decision support.

Background

  • In 2025Q2, LGL-HDA supported a customer running Comboware Virtuozzo/OpenVZ.
  • The environment was highly closed: no hypervisor-level image export path was available; backups could only be generated from software installed inside each VM.
  • WalksCloud accepted a technical assessment role only and did not operate as internal staff for the SI.

Challenges

  1. No direct VM export path: backup files existed, but there was no standard OVF/OVA-style handoff from hypervisor layer.
  2. Coordination boundary risk: engagement structure restricted direct end-customer interaction.
  3. Multi-stage conversion overhead: OpenVZ and PVE were not directly interchangeable.

WalksCloud assessment method

  1. Backup to ESXi restoration validation

    • Used VM-internal backup artifacts and restore tooling to reconstruct workloads on ESXi.
    • Verified restored VM boot and application availability.
  2. ESXi to PVE transition validation

    • Exported VM to standard transfer formats from ESXi and imported into PVE.
    • Verified boot, login, and service continuity on PVE.
  3. Feasibility reporting

    • Reported that migration was feasible, but required a multi-step path: OpenVZ to ESXi to PVE.
    • Clarified that single-hop direct conversion was not achievable under current environment constraints.

Outcome

  • Technical feasibility was confirmed through staged conversion validation.
  • After receiving the assessment, LGL-HDA did not start a follow-up execution project during this phase.
  • WalksCloud closed the engagement at the advisory and validation boundary.
